SparkFun RN-42 Bluetooth SMD Module

The SparkFun RN-42 is a compact, fully qualified Class 2 Bluetooth module designed to easily replace wired serial connections. Featuring a completely encapsulated Bluetooth stack and a simple UART interface, it allows data to pass transparently between your embedded system and host devices. It is an ideal wireless solution for students, makers, and engineers developing short-range, battery-powered projects.

Transparent serial communication

Designed to function as a wireless serial cable replacement, the RN-42 handles the entire Bluetooth stack internally. Characters sent from a host terminal are passed directly through to the TX pin, streamlining integration without requiring complex protocol configuration.

Low-power performance

As a Class 2 device offering a range of approximately 50 to 60 feet, the module is engineered for power efficiency. It draws just 26uA in sleep mode while remaining fully discoverable and connectable, with configurable power modes to suit battery-operated designs.

Interface and protocol support

Operating at 3.3V, the module features a fully configurable UART supporting data rates up to 3Mbps and over-air speeds from 721kbps to 2.0Mbps. It supports SPP, HID, GAP, SDP, RFCOMM, and L2CAP profiles, and serves as a pin-compatible alternative to the RN-41.
