Dagu RS002A Infrared Compound Eye Sensor Module

The Dagu RS002A Infrared Compound Eye is a multi-directional optical sensor designed to help robots detect and track movement within a 200 mm range. Featuring four pairs of infrared phototransistors and matching infrared LEDs, it enables systems to measure ambient light, detect reflections, and operate as a simple rangefinder. It is ideally suited for students, hobbyists, and makers building interactive robotics and pan-and-tilt tracking rigs.

Movement tracking and rangefinding

When mounted onto a pan/tilt assembly, this sensor allows your robot to track movement within 200 mm by shining infrared light onto an object and following the reflected beam. It can also be utilised as a simple optical rangefinder for proximity detection.

Infrared sensing configuration

The module is equipped with four pairs of IR phototransistors and four IR LEDs that allow your robot to measure both ambient and reflected IR light. The IR LEDs can be switched using a microcontroller digital output, enabling differential measurements between ambient conditions and active reflections.

Hardware and connection requirements

The board is designed to fit a universal sensor bracket for convenient physical mounting. Your microcontroller requires four available analogue inputs to read the phototransistor pairs, along with a digital output pin to toggle the IR LEDs.

Operating considerations

This sensor is designed for indoor use and does not work in bright daylight. Sunlight contains high levels of infrared radiation that saturate and blind the phototransistors.
