Description
The SparkFun RedBot Wheel Encoder enables your mobile robot to accurately track wheel revolutions, distance travelled, and rotational speed. It operates by detecting the motion of motor-connected gear teeth via reflected infrared light. This module is an excellent addition for students, educators, and makers working on wheeled robotics projects.
Infrared revolution tracking
The sensor measures the amount of reflected infrared light bounced off the teeth connected to a motor. This optical measurement allows the controller to determine both the distance travelled and the velocity of each wheel.
Straightforward connectivity and mounting
A 6-pin header allows direct connection to a RedBot Mainboard using female-to-female jumper wires. Two integrated mounting holes ensure secure and straightforward physical attachment to your robot chassis.
Outputs and software integration
The module provides two digital outputs and operates at 5 V DC in a non-quadrature configuration. Wheel measurements can be integrated into your code using the dedicated RedBot library.
