Description

The RS485 Shield for Arduino converts standard UART and serial signals into robust RS485 communication, allowing your Arduino Uno to connect to industrial devices, meters, and sensors over long distances. It is an ideal interface board for students, hobbyists, and engineers building multi-node automation systems or outdoor sensor networks.

Long-distance industrial communication

RS485 uses a balanced differential line over twisted-pair wiring to support multi-drop bus topologies over distances up to 1200 metres. It enables high-speed data transmission up to 35 Mbit/s at short range and 100 kbit/s over maximum cable runs.

Long-distance industrial communication

Versatile connection options

The board integrates standard screw terminal RS485 connections, a mini RS485 port, pin headers, and a PH2.0 sensor connector for DFRobot RS485 devices like the URM04 ultrasonic sensor. Transceiver indicator LEDs provide immediate visual feedback during data transfer.

Flexible operation and programming modes

An onboard toggle allows switching between automatic transceiver control and manual mode, which uses digital pin 2 as the transmission enable line. A dedicated programming switch isolates the UART lines so you can flash the Arduino without unplugging the shield.

Immersion gold PCB with prototyping area

Constructed with a gold immersion finish and stacking pins for Uno-compatible controllers, the shield provides full access to 16 digital IO ports including I2C, 6 analog ports, and a reset switch. An integrated welding area makes efficient use of free board space for soldering custom DIY circuitry.

System requirements and wiring notes

Completing an RS485 installation requires an Arduino Uno-compatible host, twisted-pair cabling for A and B lines, appropriate protocol handling such as Modbus RTU, and termination considerations for extended bus lengths. An isolated interface is recommended for high-noise industrial installations or long outdoor cable runs.
