Description
The SparkFun XBee Shield equips any standard Arduino-footprint development board with seamless wireless communication capabilities using popular XBee modules. It features on-board 3.3V regulation, MOSFET level shifting, and a switchable serial connection for hardware or digital pin routing. Ideal for makers, students, and educators building wireless sensor networks and remote-control robotics projects.
Wireless module compatibility
The shield mates directly with any standard Arduino development board footprint to provide reliable wireless connectivity. It is fully compatible with all Series 1 and Series 2 XBee modules, including both standard and Pro versions.
Flexible serial routing and power
An on-board SPDT switch lets you route the XBee DIN and DOUT serial pins to hardware UART (D0, D1) or digital pins (D2, D3 default). Power is drawn from the 5V Arduino supply and regulated to 3.3V DC on the board, with dedicated MOSFET level shifting on data lines.
Prototyping area and indicators
A 9x11 grid of 0.1-inch spaced prototyping holes and a pass-through reset button provide room for custom circuit additions. Dedicated indicator LEDs show real-time status for power, DIN, DOUT, RSSI, and DIO5 pins.
Assembly requirements
The shield does not come with pre-soldered headers, so stackable or standard male headers must be installed prior to use. An XBee radio module is not included and must be purchased separately.
