Description
The Tilt Compensated Magnetic Compass (CMPS12) is a 4th-generation 9-DOF orientation module designed for robotics, navigation, and motion tracking projects. Built around the Bosch BNO055 sensor, it provides precise heading, pitch, and roll data by running internal fusion algorithms that actively eliminate tilt errors. It is ideal for students, makers, and engineers building autonomous vehicles, balancing robots, or inertial navigation systems.
Bosch BNO055 tilt compensation
The module combines a 3-axis magnetometer, 3-axis gyroscope, and 3-axis accelerometer powered by an onboard Bosch BNO055 processor. Integrated fusion algorithms automatically correct for PCB tilt, delivering 0.1 degree resolution and heading accuracy better than 1 percent.
Comprehensive orientation and raw outputs
Data outputs include dual 16-bit heading calculations, a simplified 8-bit heading scaled from 0 to 255, pitch, roll, and ambient chip temperature in degrees Celsius. Developers can also access raw 16-bit sensor data directly for each individual axis across the magnetometer, accelerometer, and gyro.

I2C and serial communication
The board supports both standard I2C operation up to 400 kHz and serial communication at baud rates of 9600, 19200, or 38400. Interface selection is determined easily by reading the state of the dedicated mode pin during power-up.
Flexible supply and signal compatibility
The module accepts any power input between 3.3V and 5V with a nominal current draw of 18mA. Logic signal lines operate at 3.3V and are fully 5V tolerant, allowing direct connection to a wide variety of microcontrollers.
Broad project versatility
With its dynamic orientation tracking, the CMPS12 is well suited for aircraft stabilization, self-balancing robots, and indoor inertial navigation. It also fits applications in altimeters and human-computer interaction systems.
Included in the package
Each pack includes one Tilt Compensated Magnetic Compass (CMPS12) module ready for integration into your electronics setup.
