Description

The TFmini-S is an ultra-compact, unidirectional Time-of-Flight (ToF) solid-state LiDAR sensor capable of measuring distances up to 12 metres. Designed for students, makers, and robotics developers, it provides rapid, high-precision distance detection for indoor and outdoor projects.

Measuring only 42 x 15 x 16 mm and weighing less than 5 g, this sensor is engineered for tight spaces and weight-sensitive builds. Its small footprint allows for direct integration into micro-robotics and compact payloads.

Flexible microcontroller communication

The module operates from a standard 5V supply with an average power draw of 0.6W and supports switchable UART and I2C communication. It connects directly to development boards such as Arduino using dedicated libraries and IO expansion shields.

Reliable 12-metre ranging performance

Using an 850 nm optical source with a 2-degree field of view, the sensor detects objects from 10 cm up to 12 metres with a 1 mm resolution. It delivers an accuracy of plus or minus 6 cm up to 6 metres and plus or minus 1 percent between 6 and 12 metres, backed by 70 Klux ambient light resistance.

Broad robotics and drone applications

Supporting refresh rates up to 1000 Hz, the unit is well suited to real-time distance tracking. Common implementations include altitude holding and terrain following on quadcopters, obstacle detection on mobile robots, and machine safety systems.

Measurements may become unreliable when facing highly reflective surfaces such as mirrors or transparent barriers like glass and water. The kit contains one TFmini-S LiDAR sensor along with two dedicated wiring cables.
