Description
The TF-UW500 is a compact direct Time-of-Flight (dToF) underwater single-point LiDAR capable of measuring distances beyond 5m in low-turbidity conditions. Designed for makers, robotics students, and engineers, it provides high-precision mapping and navigation for pool-cleaning systems and custom underwater robotic vehicles.
Compact integration and waterproof requirement
Measuring just 24x16x20.4mm and weighing under 5g, the sensor is built for space-constrained submersibles. Please note it does not include a back cover or ingress protection rating, so custom waterproof sealing must be integrated into your enclosure.
Extended range and directional optical sensing
Using a Class 1 eye-safe laser and a narrow 0.5-degree field of view, the module provides a 10x range increase over the previous generation in low-turbidity water. The focused optical spot minimises multipath interference often encountered with traditional underwater ultrasonic sensors.

Centimetre-level positioning accuracy
The sensor achieves accuracy under 3cm and repeatability under 1cm between 0.1m and 2m, with a 1mm distance resolution and a 20Hz default frame rate. A blind zone of 0.1m or less ensures reliable proximity detection for mapping and docking.

Ambient light and surface calibration
Hardware filtering and anti-glare algorithms allow the module to operate in ambient light conditions up to 100Klux. It is pre-calibrated for over 10 common pool materials to maintain stable distance tracking across different underwater surfaces and varying turbidity levels.

Flexible electrical and communication interfaces
The unit operates on a 5V DC supply with an average current draw under 100mA and uses standard 3.3V TTL serial levels. Output is switchable between UART and I2C interfaces via command, connecting via a 1.0mm 4-pin header.
