Description
The SRF08 Ultrasonic Distance Sensor is a high-precision ranging module capable of measuring distances from 3 cm up to 6 metres over a standard I2C bus. Featuring onboard ambient light sensing and automatic echo timing, it is ideal for robotics builders, students, and makers developing autonomous navigation and spatial monitoring systems.
Long-range acoustic distance measurement
Operating at a 40 kHz acoustic frequency, the module reliably measures distances from 3 cm up to 6 metres. Measurement data can be reported directly to your microcontroller in microseconds, millimetres, or inches.
Standard I2C bus integration
The sensor communicates over a standard I2C bus, simplifying connection to platforms like Arduino and Raspberry Pi. Internal timing hardware processes pulse transmissions and reflections automatically, removing intensive timing calculations from the host controller.
Multiple echo detection
The module continues listening after detecting the first reflected pulse to capture multiple echoes. This multi-echo capability improves measurement reliability when navigating cluttered environments with uneven surfaces or multiple obstacles.
Integrated ambient light sensor
A front-facing light sensor provides onboard ambient illumination detection alongside sonar ranging. This dual-sensing capability allows robotics projects to monitor spatial obstacles and environmental light levels from a single compact board.
Programmable 32-step analogue gain
Receiver sensitivity can be tuned using adjustable analogue gain from 94 to 1025 across 32 programmable steps. This adaptive amplification optimises detection performance across varying acoustic reflection conditions.
Compact low-power hardware design
Operating from a 5V supply, the unit draws a typical current of 15 mA and approximately 3 mA in standby mode. Measuring 43 mm by 20 mm by 17 mm, it integrates easily into space-constrained and battery-powered mobile robotics platforms.
