Description

The Sharp GP2Y0A21 is a compact infrared distance sensor designed for reliable short-range measurement between 10 cm and 80 cm. Using optical triangulation, it provides stable distance readings that remain consistent regardless of ambient lighting or surface colour variations. It is an ideal sensing solution for students, makers, and hobbyists building autonomous robots, interactive displays, and automation systems.

Optical triangulation technology

The module combines an infrared emitter, a position-sensitive detector, and integrated signal processing to calculate distance through geometric triangulation. This approach delivers significantly more reliable and repeatable data than basic reflective infrared sensors.

Straightforward analog integration

A continuous analog voltage output corresponds directly to the detected distance across the 10 cm to 80 cm range with a typical 1.9 V differential. It connects easily to standard microcontroller ADC inputs such as Arduino or to comparator circuits for obstacle-trigger logic.

Convenient 3-pin JST cabling

The sensor features a 3-pin JST connector arranged sequentially for power, ground, and analog signal lines. An included 3-pin JST cable enables rapid plug-and-play prototyping without soldering.

Compact dimensions and electrical specifications

Operating from 4.5 V to 5.5 V with an average current draw of 30 mA, the sensor delivers a rapid response time of 38 ± 10 ms. The lightweight 3.5 g unit measures 29.5 × 13.0 × 13.5 mm, allowing for effortless mounting in compact enclosures.

Versatile robotics and automation uses

This sensor is well suited for autonomous robot navigation, obstacle avoidance routines, and smart appliance prototypes. It also offers a dependable, low-cost platform for STEM education experiments and interactive electronics demonstrations.
