Description

The IR Break Beam Sensor (50cm) is a fast, non-contact optical detection module consisting of an infrared transmitter and receiver pair. It reliably detects non-transparent objects over distances up to 50cm with a response time under 2ms, making it an excellent choice for robotics competition timing, speed traps, and maker automation projects.

The transmitter emits a beam of human-invisible infrared light toward the matched receiver. When an object passes between them and breaks the beam, the receiver immediately triggers an output signal.

Rapid response and dual voltage range

With a response speed of less than 2ms, this sensor is suited for fast-moving motion and timing applications. It provides an induction distance of up to 50cm at 5V, and up to 20cm when powered at 3.3V.

Compact footprint for narrow spaces

Measuring only 20 x 10 x 9mm with a 3mm optical aperture, the modules easily fit into tight project enclosures and robotic mechanisms. They operate reliably within an indoor temperature range of -25°C to 60°C.

Direct relay and microcontroller interfacing

Running on 3.0V to 5.0V DC, the NPN normally open output can be read directly by an Arduino or other 3.3V/5V logic. With a 100mA output capacity, it can also switch compatible relays directly without intermediate driver circuits.

Supplied hardware and wiring layout

Each pack includes one transmitter and one receiver with 25cm lead wires. Both units connect power via red (positive) and black (ground) wires, while the receiver uses a white wire for the NPN output signal.
