Gravity: SGP40 Air Quality Sensor

The Gravity: SGP40 Air Quality Sensor is a compact volatile organic compound (VOC) detection module powered by Sensirion's SGP40 chip. It delivers a direct, humidity-compensated VOC index without requiring manual calibration. It is well suited to students, makers, and hobbyists building indoor environmental monitors, smart thermostats, and automated ventilation projects.

Sensirion SGP40 digital VOC sensing

Built on Sensirion CMOSens technology, the module incorporates a temperature-controlled micro-hotplate and an on-chip VOC algorithm. It directly converts detected ethanol equivalents from 0 to 1000 ppm into a standardised VOC index ranging from 0 to 500.

Automatic compensation and rapid response

Built-in temperature and humidity compensation ensures reliable air quality evaluation straight out of the box with zero user calibration required. The module requires a 10-second preheat time and delivers quick readings with a 2-second response time.

Low-power Gravity I2C connection

Operating across 3.3V to 5V with a low current draw of 2.6mA, the sensor communicates via I2C at address 0x59. Official C and Python libraries are available to streamline setup across multiple microcontrollers.

Compact form for indoor automation

With a footprint of 20 by 22 mm, the board operates across temperatures from -10°C to 50°C and humidity levels from 0% to 90% RH. It is suited for continuous indoor deployment in kitchen hoods, air purifiers, and demand-controlled ventilation systems.
