Description
The Gravity: Lightning Distance Sensor detects thunderstorm distance, intensity, and frequency within a 40 km radius for indoor and outdoor projects. Powered by the AMS AS3935 Franklin IC, it is ideal for weather station builders, outdoor safety systems, and automated lightning photography rigs.
Dedicated lightning detection hardware
Equipped with an AMS AS3935 Franklin IC and a Coilcraft MA5532-AE antenna, the sensor measures lightning distance, frequency, and 21-bit intensity across a 40 km radius. Distance is estimated across 15 steps with 1 km to 4 km resolution.
Built-in disturber rejection
An embedded man-made disturber rejection algorithm filters out electromagnetic noise created by household appliances. This prevents false alarms whether the board is deployed indoors or in portable field gear.
Instantaneous interrupt triggering
The onboard IRQ pin emits a hardware pulse the moment a strike occurs. This can instantly trigger a camera shutter for lightning photography or switch sensitive equipment over to isolated backup power.
Arduino development support
Operating across 3.3V to 5.5V, the sensor connects directly to microcontrollers like the Arduino UNO using the standard Gravity I2C interface.
Raspberry Pi compatibility
The board interfaces with single-board computers such as the Raspberry Pi 3B and features three configurable I2C addresses at 0x01, 0x02, and 0x03.
Compact form factor
With a footprint of 30.0 mm by 22.0 mm, the module includes a Gravity 4-pin I2C wire and an XH2.54 2-pin header for fast integration into wearables and compact enclosures.
