Description

The Fermion TMF8701 is a compact time-of-flight distance ranging sensor designed to deliver accurate single-zone measurements from 10 mm up to 600 mm. It is ideal for robotics hobbyists, makers, and students looking for reliable proximity sensing that operates independently of target colour, texture, or ambient light levels.

The module features an integrated microcontroller that runs all ranging algorithms directly on-chip with no external optics required. It breaks out all essential pins to a standard 2.54 mm header for fast prototyping and I2C fast-mode communication.

Wiring and system integration

Operating at 2.7V to 3.3V, the board connects easily to microcontrollers via standard I2C lines. An enable pin allows deep power-down mode, reducing current draw to just 0.26 µA when idle.

Dual-mode time-of-flight measurement

The sensor measures the time difference of light pulses to provide a proximity range of 1 to 10 cm and a distance ranging mode of 10 to 60 cm. With a 21-degree field of illumination, it detects the closest central object within ±5% accuracy.

Sunlight rejection and dynamic calibration

On-chip sunlight rejection filters ensure dependable operation in bright outdoor environments as well as complete darkness. A built-in histogram provides real-time crosstalk compensation and adjusts for dirt or smudges on the cover glass.

Class 1 eye safety and low power modes

The unit employs an eye-safe 940 nm VCSEL Class 1 emitter. Power consumption remains efficient across modes, drawing only 940 µA at 10 Hz in proximity mode and 26 mA at 60 Hz during combined distance and proximity sensing.

Target applications and physical dimensions

Measuring only 21 by 14.5 mm with a 17 mm mounting pitch, the sensor fits easily into compact builds. It is suitable for obstacle avoidance, presence detection, 3D face recognition triggers, and object measurement.
