Fermion: 8421 Encoder-Vertical (Breakout)

The Fermion: 8421 Encoder-Vertical is a 16-position absolute rotary encoder breakout designed for reliable status and mode selection. Because each mechanical position outputs a unique 8421 binary-coded state, it does not require calibration, continuous counting, or non-volatile memory. It is ideal for makers, students, and engineers building robust control panels, device status selectors, and embedded interfaces.

Absolute 16-position encoding

The encoder features 16 discrete gear positions labelled 0 through F, outputting standard 8421 binary code. Each mechanical position is completely unique, allowing your microcontroller to read the exact dial state instantly without needing a reference point.

Instant state recovery without memory

Unlike incremental encoders or potentiometers, this absolute encoder does not require continuous counting routines or power-off memory storage. The physical switch position directly determines the signal, so the correct state is readable immediately upon power-up.

High interference resistance

The mechanical contact design provides strong immunity against electrical interference for dependable data readings. This makes it well suited for industrial status control and harsh operating environments.

Electrical and thermal specifications

The unit is rated for an operating current of 150mA at 42V and offers an operating lifespan of 10,000 steps. It functions reliably across an industrial temperature range from -40°C to 85°C.

Compact breakout and mounting

The breakout board measures 19 x 19mm with a 15 x 15mm mounting hole pitch and 2.0mm aperture diameter for easy enclosure mounting. The kit includes the vertical encoder breakout and two 3-pin 2.54mm black pin headers.
