Description

The DFM8001 Indoor Ambient Energy Harvesting Kit is a modular development solution designed to create self-powered IoT sensor nodes. Ideal for makers, engineering students, and IoT developers, it captures microwatt-level energy from indoor ambient sources. The kit comes complete with an evaluation board, an indoor photovoltaic panel, and two supercapacitor storage modules.

Multi-source microwatt energy harvesting

The module captures energy from indoor mechanical, thermal, solar, and radio frequency sources. It initiates from a cold-start input of 400mV at 15uW and sustains operation down to 150mV across a 150mV to 5V input range.

Dynamic maximum power point tracking

Integrated dynamic MPPT samples the source status five times per second to optimise energy collection from low-power ambient sources. Selectable MPPT ratios of 70%, 75%, 85%, and 90% allow precise matching with different harvesting transducers.

Dual-channel regulated power outputs

Two independent switched LDO channels supply power to target systems, with a low-voltage output delivering 1.2V to 1.8V up to 20mA and a high-voltage output delivering 1.8V to 4.1V up to 80mA. The board also provides an output availability indicator.

Integrated energy storage management

The onboard circuitry provides adjustable overcharge protection from 2.7V to 4.5V and overdischarge protection from 2.2V to 3.6V. It supports any rechargeable battery or capacitor, features a low battery warning, and accommodates a disposable backup battery.

Complete evaluation kit contents

The bundle includes the 15x15mm DFM8001 evaluation board, a 45x45mm amorphous silicon solar panel generating 90uW at 200Lux, and two supercapacitors rated at 0.22F and 1.5F. The system can also be paired with organic or dye-sensitised solar panels.
