VS1003B MP3 Audio Decoder and Encoder Development Board

The VS1003B audio decoder and encoder board is a versatile sound processing module capable of decoding MP3, WMA, WAV, and MIDI formats as well as recording in IMA ADPCM. Equipped with onboard audio outputs, an integrated microphone, and line-in interfaces, it communicates via SPI. It is ideal for students, makers, and hobbyists building custom audio players, sound synthesizers, and voice-recording projects.

Audio playback and recording

The module decodes a wide variety of formats including MP3, MP3+V, WMA, WAV, MIDI, and SP-MIDI, with full support for MP3 and WAV streams. For audio capture, it encodes monaural sound into IMA ADPCM via either the onboard microphone or the dedicated line input.

Integrated audio circuitry

Sound output is powered by an onboard stereo DAC paired with a 30-ohm stereo headphone driver, alongside an adjustable on-chip 16-space ADC. The audio processing pipeline is clocked by a 12.288 MHz crystal and an internal PLL clock frequency multiplier.

Power and communication interfaces

The board operates on a single +5 V DC supply filtered with capacitors, featuring onboard 1117 LDO regulators providing 3.3V and 2.5V at up to 800 mA across isolated analog, digital, and IO lines. Data and control signals are accessed through standard SPI breakout connections.
