The HC-SR501 is an adjustable pyroelectric infrared (PIR) motion sensor designed for reliable human presence detection in microcontroller projects. It is an ideal choice for South African students, educators, and makers building automated lighting, security systems, or robotics.

Regulated power supply requirements

This PIR module requires a highly stable and well-filtered DC operating voltage to prevent performance degradation. We recommend using a power transformer and a three-terminal regulator chip, filtered through 220uF and 0.1uF capacitors.

When testing, maintain a distance from the sensing area as body proximity can cause accidental triggers even from behind. For a scientific debugging approach, connect an LED or multimeter to the output, cover the sensor with a newspaper, and wait two minutes to verify the state.

Load troubleshooting and isolation

If the module experiences disruption only when connected to a load, you can resolve this by adding an inductor filter to the power section. Alternatively, run the load and module on different voltages using a three-terminal regulator for isolation, or upgrade to a higher capacity power supply.
