A study by curriculum review nonprofit EdReports found that only one of ten evaluated K-12 providers offered third-party evidence that its AI tools improve learning outcomes.

A qualitative review by non-profit curriculum reviewer EdReports has revealed that K-12 edtech and curriculum providers are rapidly embedding artificial intelligence features without demonstrating measurable gains in student learning. Of the ten providers assessed—spanning four top-tier instructional publishers, three mid-sized curriculum developers, and three digital-first edtech firms—only one offered third-party evidence that its embedded AI tools improved educational outcomes.

The findings highlight an operational challenge for schools managing digital instruction: behind-the-scenes platform updates frequently introduce AI tools without explicit vendor alerts or opt-in controls. Sector specialists, including Digital Promise and the Center for Education Market Dynamics, warn that unannounced feature updates compromise procurement oversight, meaning initial adoption vetting no longer guarantees the instructional integrity or quality of the tools being used in the classroom.

EdReports also identified an industry-wide gap in evaluation standards. While existing frameworks routinely assess digital software for data privacy and user safety, standard benchmarks for determining whether embedded AI preserves curriculum coherence or strengthens academic achievement remain largely undeveloped across the sector.
