Commemorating South Africa's 485,000 educators on World Teachers' Day, the Department of Basic Education highlighted targeted literacy and numeracy training currently underway for 10,000 foundation phase teachers.

Marking World Teachers’ Day, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) paid tribute to South Africa’s approximately 485,000 educators while highlighting ongoing professional development initiatives. Following the recent 2026 National Teacher Awards, Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube and Deputy Minister Dr Reginah Mhaule pointed to teacher development as the core mechanism for driving systemic reform across township, rural, and urban classrooms.

A key focus of the department’s current baseline strategy is early-grade capacity building, with 10,000 foundation phase teachers receiving targeted training in literacy and numeracy this year. The DBE noted that these efforts run alongside the continued rollout of the National Reading Literacy Strategy, Early Childhood Development (ECD) strengthening, and support for Mother Tongue-based Bilingual Education.

The emphasis on early-grade numeracy and literacy training reflects a critical reality for foundational education in South Africa: advanced curriculum objectives depend entirely on whether educators can successfully embed core competencies during a learner's formative years. Strengthening teacher proficiency in fundamental numeracy and reading creates the necessary foundation before learners encounter more complex technical and analytical subjects in higher grades.
