The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) has released a national guide titled the AI Framework for Educator Preparation. Developed by AACTE’s Programmatic Advisory Committee on Innovation and Technology alongside organizational leadership and external reviewers, the resource establishes standards for educator preparation programs (EPPs) preparing future teachers for AI-enabled learning environments.

Rather than treating AI purely as software training, the framework defines AI competency as a foundational element of professional practice, organized around four interconnected areas:

• Ethical and policy guardrails: Managing AI literacy, student data privacy, equitable access, and responsible governance.
• Clinical practice and implementation: Evaluating AI systems and methodically integrating them into classroom pedagogy.
• Cognitive architecture and advocacy: Understanding cognitive load, metacognition, and algorithmic bias to ensure AI supports rather than replaces critical thinking.
• Professional expertise and human judgment: Keeping educators centered in instructional decision-making, ethical reasoning, and student relationships.

The guidance marks a strategic shift in ed-tech policy, moving teacher training from basic tool adoption toward rigorous oversight, bias recognition, and data protection. For education authorities updating coding, robotics, and digital literacy curricula, the framework highlights that deploying AI in schools depends primarily on training educators to critically evaluate algorithmic tools before introducing them to learners.
