Good to know

Frequently Asked Questions

What age can my child start coding and robotics classes?

We enroll children from age 6 (turning 6 in the first half of the year is fine). Classes are grouped by age: Intro (6–8), Junior (9–11) and Explorer (12–15). We also run a beginner-friendly Python course for adults.

Where is sheen academy located?

Our campus is at Unit C4, Century Square, Heron Crescent, Century City, Cape Town 7441. We currently operate in Cape Town only, and run a school outreach program for schools further afield.

Can I book a free trial class?

Yes — you are welcome to visit the academy with your child for a free one-hour hands-on session, and parents may sit in and observe. Book online at sheen.bot/academy/trial.

What will my child learn?

Our CAPS-aligned curriculum builds computational thinking, engineering design and digital literacy: children start with block-based coding (Scratch and Mind+) and progress to real Python programming, using kits such as sheenbot∞, WhalesBot and LEGO SPIKE — the same platform our FIRST® LEGO® League teams compete on.

How big are the classes?

Classes are kept small — a maximum of 6 to 8 students per educator — so every child gets individual attention.

How much do classes cost and how does billing work?

Lessons are R280 each, with 4 lessons per month (R1,120 per month). Enrollment is a month-to-month subscription with no registration fee, and you can cancel before the next month begins.

Does my child need to bring a laptop or equipment?

No — all laptops, robotics kits and materials are provided by the academy.

Can my child join mid-term?

Yes. New classes start at the beginning of every month, so your child can join at any time.

Do students receive certificates?

Yes, learners receive certificates of completion, and keen students can go on to represent the academy in our FIRST® LEGO® League and FIRST® Tech Challenge teams.

Can my child compete in robotics competitions?

Yes. From 2026 Sheen Academy competes in the FIRST® ecosystem: FIRST LEGO League Explore (ages 6-10), FLL Challenge (ages 9-16) and a FIRST Tech Challenge squad (ages 12-18). Sheen Academy covers all FLL season costs — registration, equipment and coaching — at no additional cost to parents; the FTC squad is R11,500 per student for the full season and is open to external students too. Teams train on separate days from weekly classes (FLL on Fridays and Saturdays, FTC on Wednesdays and Fridays), so it is an additional time commitment rather than a clash. See sheen.bot/academy/competition.

Do you run school-holiday workshops or camps?

Yes — we run hands-on holiday workshops and camps at the Century City campus, with limited seats per session. See sheen.bot/academy/workshops for the current programme.
